Default Pets.

Started a Ranger recently, been looking on wiki for information on pets but theres a few things i want to confirm/ask.

Firstly... Ive played other games and until i read the wiki i assumed that the pet tamers were there to store your current pet, so you could have more than one. Instead all they do is delete your pet? Thats dull.

Also... Pet evolution. It mentioned it but nothing says how. Does it just happen naturally or do you have to do something?

What do people here think is the best pet? I have a tiger and it seems good. Is it just a matter of looks only? I read that Black Bear has a skill that makes it slower, does what the skill does make it worth it?

Thanks for any replies...

all pets exept the bear have the same dps and some have piercing instead of slashing dmg

Evolutions : Hearty = -15%dmg +100hp, elder = no chances rumour : +3dmg, dire = +15%dmg -100hp

Yes, yes, the information about the various evolutions was on wiki. But not how it happens.

That's because no one truly knows why pet evolutions happen. It has something to do with your pet dealing more damage than you or it takes, but even then the exact math behind it is sketchy at best. But if you want a hearty pet, just have it follow you around in PvE as you do whatever it is you usually do. If you want a dire pet, you have to set up some kind of pet farming build. And if you want an elder pet... good luck.

Your pet should turn hearty just through getting it to level 15.

there is also "playful"

there should be a link on the wiki with a nice article on death leveling your pet and other methods to reach those various pet evolutions.

Hearty is easy to get all you do is have the pet and don't use pet skills, it will die and die and die, eventually becoming hearty.

The other two evolutions take work and as has been said little information to be found about it.

Apparently if you let your pet do the damage dealing while keeping it alive it becomes Dire.

If true that would indicate.

Die a lot you get tougher more hits less damage = Hearty
Attack a lot you get more vicious and deal out more damage = Dire

Achieve a balance between the two and you get Elder.

There is an interim evolution level so you can correct if its evolving not as you would wish, if Playful it means its heading towards Hearty, aggressive and its heading towards Dire.

Some pets can be found already evolved the Black Moa from factions is an example its lvl 20 and is Elder when you capture it.

Pets will evolve twice usually. once at lvl 10-14ish and then lvl15-20ish and their final evolution will depend on the path they take to it.

Final Evolutions
Dire is -60hp and +15% damage
Elder 480hp and normal damage
Hearty is +60 and -15% damage

Mid Evolutions
Aggressive is -30hp and +5% damage
Playful is +30hp and -5% damage

Evolution Path
High damage given / Low damage taken and it will go to Aggressive at E1 and then Dire and E2
Low Damage given / High damage taken and it will go to Playful at E1 and Hearty at E2
If it does nothing then it will stay unevolved and end that way (same stats as Elder)

You are supposed to be able to change track at E1 to gain an Elder pet but i've tried a number of times and it hasnt worked for me (not saying you can't , i may just be shit at it )

eg
Let it kill alot until it hits aggressive then make it die alot and you get an Elder at E2
Let it die alot until it hits playful then let it kill alot and you get an elder at E2

Getting an Evolution
Getting Hearty is the simplest , just let it die alot and thats what it will end up as.
Getting Dire is pretty easy. Take a couple of heros on passive with nothing but a res. Find the pet and agro it and let it kill you over and over until it levels up and then charm it. Takes about 30 mins or so.

I have a hearty just now just because I cant be arsed retrying another Elder evolution

As for which pets? Polar Bears are ftw though white tigers are also pretty cool

Bears use a skill; Brutal Mauling it does nothing but slow down it's dps, It DOES triggers Paragon shouts/chants, so that might be useful for your build.

Actually, you can have Agressive and Playful as final evolutions as well.

Untrue. There is a science to it. I've used it successfully over 20 times since the game came out. I believe I even read the basics of it here on guru.

Yes Dire Pets come from the pet doing the dmg, and not dying much or at all. To do this one usually needs to death level or run a beastmaster build. The best way to do this is to work your way up keeping the enemy level lower than the pet, or to go to boreal station and level the pet on wurms. do not help the pet with a staff or bow let it do the work.

To get a hearty you don't even have to keep the pet alive. let it die and keep killing it will level and evolve to hearty. The best way to do this is the ss/lb farm in NF imo but you can do it easy anywhere.

For the other evolutions I'm not sure because I deal in one or other side of bar. But seems like to get elder you can charm one (many pets in game are default elder)
or you can just start in a lower level area and go out and kill with your pet, the combo of you attacking and it should make it evolve in the middle of the evolution chain.

good luck!
